My experience is primaryly out side the US and I have worked in a few countries first as a desktop administrator and moved on to designing and implementation of fairly large network. The question to ask yourself is where want to go with your career and what are the requirements for getting there.

In most companies the HR department usually have fairly clear path way for being promoted if you already work in that enviroment , certifications are normallly important get ahead. Certifications are necessary if you want to move ahead in that sort of structured enviroment, becuase it requirement by the organisation along with some business degree, this well get into administration and mid management.

If you are actually interested in the field and want develop a profession my prefered goal you can start with some engineering or computer science degree which teach you general problem solving and anslysis and use the certifications to gain specific product knowledge also useful in picking up jobs. However the base atitude is to love learning and self development, whether through the class room or reading books, I find generally the best engineers love toteach them selves.
