Brian Wendel: When you saw the experts up close and heart them, it was an amazing experience. We were very much looking forward to how people would react when they saw this footage. We hoped it would have the same impact on the audience as it was having on all of us.
Several of our crew, such as a co-producer and cameraman, had not been plant-based going in, and they went plant-based as a result of what they saw on set. Alison Boon [a co-producer] shot simple B role of Colin Campbell in Maine, and she came back from that first trip plant-based.
And before she got hired she had told John Corry that she would never go vegan. But she was so impacted by that first shoot with Colin that she became an advocate for plant-based eating. And our goal has been to make it possible for people to adopt the lifestyle as something that is easy and enjoyable. Producing more products and services to make it possible for more people to adopt this lifestyle is the goal.
Before we got into this, adopting the Plant-based or whole food diet thought to be possible but not that healthy because you need meat for protein and dairy for calcium. But that idea has shifted. The idea that it was necessary or even beneficial to eat meat and dairy is something that is rapidly being put aside, and we had a role in that.
Everyone knows now that eating plant-based is healthy. The question now is can they do it? And that is a different question than people had back in when the film came out. They both grew up on farms, they both had once believed that milk was nature's perfect foods and they both were at leading research centers [The Cleveland Clinic and Cornell] and they both had a seminal moment and realized that a plant-based diet can save lives.

Their stories were the most compelling. The fact that they were on the other side at one point -- brought up on dairy farms -- gave us the story thread. As soon as we decided that we were off and running.
It took about two years and then two more months to get it into the theatres. It started in Jan and it was in theatres in May It was a whole journey to get it out into the world. BW: "The whole thing of getting it into theatres is all pretty crazy. We decided to go with a less conventional approach.
We knew we had something that would resonate with the public. We were thinking of an advanced screening program. We collaborated with local Whole Foods to do 30 advance screenings at theatres near the stores, but we had to make separate arrangements in each market.
The screenings were wildly successful and all except one was sold out, often with lines down the street. Forks became popular and it resonated with people, and we would get emails from fans. One guy wrote to us and said, "You are costing people's lives by not releasing it now. BW: "Despite the success of the advanced screenings and the popularity we were achieving on Facebook we still had trouble getting distribution in theatres. So in January of , we decided to rent a movie theatre in Portland, Oregon, and register ourselves with a national movie tracking system to get recognized.
It was pretty risky because we had to rent the theatre out for a week and hold showings like a regular movie, with no guarantee that we would sell any tickets. And because we were registered with this box office company, after that we were able to book theatres around the country.
They wanted to book Forks Over Knives, which was exciting. So we were our own distributor. We kicked it off with a red-carpet premiere in Los Angeles, with celebrities and the whole thing. Finally, we had the movie up on 90 screens nationwide.

They use many examples like that within this film. While the fast food revolution was sweeping the nation the rate of cancer deaths in America was continuing to rise. They picked from ones that had high risks for heart disease or type two diabetes. It only used people whose diets were full of junk food, not just meat.
With this increased awareness, however, has come an abundance of misconceptions including the notion that meat is "bad" for you.
In their haste to avoid saturated fat, physicians and the public alike have lost sight of the fact that lean meat in reasonable serving sizes poses no threat to health and is an extremely important source of many nutrients.
