How is smog formation influenced by the weather
Results and Discussion In this section, we want to consider and analyze the relationship between elements such as temperature, pressure, relative humidity, and wind speed with smog forming in Tehran using statistical methods like correlation coefficient and regression line equation. We used monthly average in statistical time — to determine correlation between climatic elements and smog forming in Tehran and obtained following results: There is relationship between time and smog forming Fig.
Open in a separate window. The relationship between smog forming and time — The relationship between inversion and smog forming in Tehran The inversion is the most dangerous air pollution. Weather maps interoperating in smog forming days We were encountered with smog forming in Tehran 18 days during —, which was obtained by our calculating. Conclusion There is a meaningful relationship between climatic elements Temperature, pressure, relative humidity, wind speed , and smog forming according to analysis has been done from correlation coefficient and regression relations between monthly average of individual variable to smog forming during statistical period — Acknowledgments The authors declare that there is no conflict of interests. It depends-- some types of pollution are worse in the summer heat, while others are worse in cold winter weather. The same atmospheric conditions that create weather-- air pressure, temperature, and humidity-- also affect air quality. Because air is almost always on the move, air pollution is easily transported from one area to another.
For example, studies in the s found that sulfur dioxide from coal burning in the Ohio Valley was carried across large distances by the wind. This caused acid rain to fall on regions of the eastern US and Canada up to a thousand miles away. Acid rain causes "dead lakes," where the acidic lake conditions prevented fish eggs from developing. Similar effects from coal burning have been found in Europe. In Asia, powerful spring winds carry clouds of industrial pollutants from China across the Gobi desert.
As the contaminated winds cross the desert, they pick up particle pollution as well, causing massive yellow dust storms across the Korean Peninsula and parts of Japan.
These yellow dust storms reduce visibility, damage plants and soils, and pose significant health risks to humans. Low pressure systems bring wet and windy conditions. Wind carries air contaminants away from their source, causing them to disperse. In general, the higher the wind speed, the more contaminants are dispersed and the lower their concentration.
However, high wind can also generate dust — a problem in dry windy rural areas. As the ground heats during the day the air becomes more turbulent, especially in the middle of the day. Air turbulence causes polluted air to disperse as it moves away from its source. In contrast, stable conditions often occur at night when the air is cooler. Air contaminants released in urban areas at night, such as from home fires, are not easily dispersed causing localised air pollution.
Air usually cools with increasing height in the atmosphere. Time - Thermal inversions occur during the evening, when the land begins to cool. Season - Inversion events have the time necessary to develop during the winter months, when nights are at their longest.
Wind - Moderate to strong winds help mix layers of cold and warm air, preventing the segmentation of a temperature inversion. With weak winds, thermal inversions are much more likely to occur.
Precipitation - Rainfall, like winds, help mix layers of air, discouraging the development of a temperature inversion. How Temperature Inversions Trap Air Pollution Temperature inversions effectively put a lid on air pollution in an area.
