Once your bird is comfortable with its captive environment, it will start to sing. They usually stop singing during their molt, which occurs during mid-to-late summer. There is nothing to get alarmed about as they go back to singing themselves after some time. Canaries are hardy birds and do not suffer from too many health-related problems. Most of the health issues occur because of improper or insufficient care, inadequate diet, drafts, and unhygienic cages.

To prevent this, place a blanket or a cover over the cage after the sun goes down. Watch for signs of sickness. Canaries have delicate lungs, and they can be prone to mites or other parasites. Method 3. Stick a few toys in their cage. Give your canary two or three items in their cage to play with. Canaries are especially fond of swings, and yours might even play with balls, bells, or sticks from trees.

Let them fly free in a room. Open the cage door to let your canary fly around for about thirty minutes. Afterwards, lure them back to their cage by putting some fresh food or treats inside. Once they are inside, close the cage door before they can fly out again. All windows and mirrors should be covered so that the canary does not fly into them. Make sure to turn off all ceiling fans before letting the canary loose.

Teach males to sing. Typically young male canaries learn to sing from an older male, but if you only have the one canary, you will need to teach them yourself. Canaries are relatively easy to care for, but they are shy and gentle birds. If you have parakeets or other types of birds in your home, don't put them in the same cage as the canary. Most other birds are too aggressive to share even spacious cages with canaries. Since canaries are a type of finch, they can share space with these little birds.

Avoid putting two male canaries in a small cage, as fighting can ensue, but you can keep same-sex birds in aviaries or big cages. Although you might like to let your canary fly free around the house on occasion, that's a recipe for a shortened lifespan. Before letting your bird out of his cage, make sure all the windows are closed so he can't escape. Close the curtains and cover mirrors so he doesn't try to fly into a clear window or reflective glass.
