Why does howard stern hate johnny carson

Howard also hated how Carson treated comedians on the Tonight Show. Comedians would do their stand-up and if they really killed, then Carson would invite them to sit on the couch, virtually making their career. Howard thought that was wrong. Howard said Dick can suck the life out of anything. Fred said the key to doing a good Cavett impression is to cram every last boring, pointless fact into the story you tell.

Merv Griffin on the other hand, seemed to think the tribute should be about him and not Carson. Joan said she knew that and Merv told her not to forget it. Merv grumbled something under his breath about that. Howard said he was also surprised to hear Joan Rivers say so many nice things about Carson.

Wiggy has always been a one trick pony talentless outsider. He does the same thing today, just with Oprah and Simon Cowell. Nothing has changed. Johnny never had Wiggy as a guest, so Howard never got a chance to try to kiss him. Plus Carson wasn't a hideous guy with a face made for radio, mainstream America liked him and he was accepted by big celebrities. Johnny also invented the three day workweek but had enough confidence to allow a guest host instead of having all reruns.

Johnny abused women, and Howard didn't like that. A lot of it was Howard trying to make a name for himself by going after icons: Carson, Elvis, Oprah, Sinatra, etc.

To get close to Howard, you kinda have to be his bitch. There was no goddamn way Carson was going to be anybody's bitch, not even a little bit. Some of the responses in here are bullish!

ArtieNoseitall said:. Unobtanium Charter Member. Carson knew Talent! You're lying or retarded if you say "yes". You're acting like Johnny owed it to Howard to have him on, no matter what Howard said about him. He didn't. Last edited: Apr 22, As importantly, he was generous to talent. He knew what a spot on The Tonight Show meant to a comedian, and doled 'em out on the regular. I think it got to the point where a simple thumbs up, or a "good job!

He gave Letterman his career. How many people did Howard cut the legs out from under? Those too young to have seen Carson back in the day, have no idea what it meant to appear on The Tonight Show. Especially for comedians. Carson was a King maker. The very next day after an appearance, a broke ass comedian living in his car would get million dollar club dates in Vegas or a TV deal on one of the major networks.

Just ask guys like Drew Carey. Their lives changed overnight after a Carson appearance. Right on. Stern laid the Bar for what's funny so low, that even Artie Lange sold out shows, after Stern Fans figured out that he is the "funniest" drunk, and paid him Shots of JD while on Stage.

Thank God those Days are over. Stand Up in America is recovering. A little disclaimer about Artie Lange. You may like him. Feel sorry for him. All legit, no problem. Yeah, I get down on my knees and pray every night that hilarious comedians like Amy Schumer and Hannah Gadsby are selling out theatres. Then why didn't Jackie sell out theatres? Artie's stand-up sucked, but it didn't matter; he was likable and his material was his own, unlike Jackie, where you knew he was a greedy creep pushing old jokes, trying to sell you a t-shirt, or a mug, or a CD.

Rupert Pupkin Who me? Howard was a regular guest on Letterman's New York-based talk show. Carson initially hated SNL and the "not ready for prime time players" even though it was an NBC show, the comedy was not for him. Johnny ran his show his way and if he invited a comedian to the sofa after the stand-up set it was his choice. Carson was not obligated to kiss up to a comedian that he believed bombed. America did have choices and for a while, there were three talk shows on at the same time.

Then Dick Cavett replaced Bishop for his "intellectual" interview-only show. CBS ran movies, which did well in the ratings. Howie has turned into Carson with his light workload and repetitive guests. Howie is worse since he has no ratings and stated he does show to entertain himself, not the audience.
