Ecology is the branch of Biology that studies how an organism interacts with the environment and how the environment impacts the organism. Nutrients from terrestrial systems wash into lakes and oceans, where additional primary production by phytoplankton and algae helps support large communities of zooplankton, fish, sea mammals, and birds.
